Things to Consider: What is Important to You?
As you consider the various Christian homeschool curriculum choices, you need to ask some basic questions of the curriculum or its publisher, as well as questions of yourself of
how important each of these issues is to you:
- Does it follow a specific denomination (Catholic? Protestant?), or doctrine that you may not adhere to? For instance, two obvious doctrinal examples would be:
- the role of women, and
- Creationism.
- How much does it focus on God's work in the entire world, as opposed to focusing on the United States?
- Does it teach about other cultures and religions, and if so, does it have a spirit of humility toward non-believers, or haughtiness?
- How conservative is it in regards to the authority of Scripture?
- Does it include books that contain offensive words or characters, and if so, how does the curriculum help you teach your child about such material?
- Does it teach you the specifics of what to believe, or does it teach you how to apply Biblical principles to help you make your own decisions?
These issues may not matter to you, but you still need to ask and answer these questions to your own satisfaction before you buy any curriculum!
What if I Don't Agree?
If you like a certain home school Christian curriculum, but don't share some of its core doctrines, what do you do? You need to ask yourself how important this differences are.
- Do you feel confident and comfortable in articulating and teaching your point of view? If not, maybe your church can offer some supplemental materials to help you.
- Are you willing to live with the tension involved in offering different points of view?
- Is now the best time to pose such questions that may have no easy answers, or might that curriculum be better for when your child is more mature?
