Reliable Home School Curriculum Review
|
|||||
Choosing home school curriculum can be one of the most frustrating, time-consuming parts of home schooling. I hope the tools on this website will help you.
Hi! My name is Hilary, a home schooling mother of four who has -- true confession time -- spent way too many hours pouring over catalogs and searching the Internet for just the right book or home school curriculum to help my kids.
The bright side? I have learned a lot about different curriculums and which home school curriculum review sites are especially useful. I'll also share what those sites don’t tell you that you still need to know before you buy.
Here are links to some of the reviews of materials we've used or reviewed so far:
- Sonlight Home School Curriculum
- Tapestry of Grace Review
- Robinson Curriculum
- Switched-on-Schoolhouse (SOS) CD-ROM Curriculum
Other Helpful Home School Curriculum Review Sites…And What You Still Need to Know Before You Buy
The following sites are some of my favorite home school curriculum review sites, the ones that I turn to when I am looking at buying new home school curriculum. The problem with most of these sites is that there is very little “negative” side of any of the products reviewed. After reading the reviews, I usually end up wanting one of everything, if you know what I mean! So, while you may find them helpful to find out information, come back here to find out how to find out if this product will be right for you.
So, despite their limitations, here are my favorite home school curriculum review sites:
- Home School Christian Reviews. They don’t have as many products reviewed as some other sites, but they have a sizable number of home schooling products in a variety of categories. They also have some interviews with curriculum authors. Home schooler Martha Robinson is the main reviewer.
- The Home School Magazine Product Reviews. They have reviews in all sorts of categories, listing more products than I had ever heard of. Products are reviewed by The Old Schoolhouse (TOS Magazine) staff writers. The reviews are usually pretty detailed. If you are like me, be prepared to put on your wish list just about any product you read about on one of their home school curriculum reviews.
- Home School Reviews. This is one of my favorites since the home school curriculum reviews are by a variety of people (you can too), and it includes how long the person has used the curriculum and for which grades. These real people tend to give really honest feedback about what they like and don’t like. Be aware that what someone else hated, may be just what you are looking for.
- Favorite Resources for Catholic Homeschoolers As with any of these review sites, you don't have to be Catholic or Christian to benefit from their reviews. They have a panel of reviewers and others who submit a wide variety of home school curriculum reviews.
More Specific Home School Curriculum Reviews:
Although these sites are more narrow in scope, they've been really helpful to me for what they do review:
- Tammy’s Basic Home School Curriculum Reviews
- Living Math Reviews. Lots of wonderful advice on math and a growing number of reviews for all sorts of math-related products, from games to curriculum to living books about math or math history. Highly recommended.
- Home School Math Reviews. Individuals are invited to post reviews.
- Eclectic Home School Reviews. Has numerous reviews of some lesser known home school curriculum.
- Sonlight Curriculum offers some excellent home school curriculum review because they share some of the potential negatives as well as the positive features are. I know they have a lot more time to check out more resources than I do, so I tend to value their opinions when they line up with my goals.
- Horizons Math Review,
- Singapore Math Review
- Saxon Math Review
- Miquon Math Review
- Teaching Textbooks Math Review
- Handwriting Reviews
- Spelling Product Reviews
- Cathy Duffy’s Home School Curriculum Reviews. Cathy Duffy reviews virtually all of the major home school curriculum, and many lesser known materials, too. I really like her reviews because they are detailed -- often with concrete examples from the materials -- and they tell me the real-life problems I might have as well as the benefits. Her reviews really help me compare home school curriculum.
- and of course, the reviews I mentioned above that I have included in this site, namely
What Do I Do Now?
After you’ve looked over all sorts of home school curriculum review sites, what then? Hopefully, you already have spent some time figuring out what you are looking for, but if not, you may find yourself even more confused as you see all the seemingly great home school curriculum.
If you don’t already have a firm grasp of what you are looking for, review the process of how you make your home schooling decisions. Look at your goal setting, learning style, the type of structure you want for your home school, and what your child needs to know. You really need to have some sense of what you want your child to learn, and what kind of teaching you want to do (unit studies? self-teaching?).
I have much more information about each of these areas that I’m eager to share with you. There is a lot of information on our site map that will help you specifically learn what your goals are, what your unique strategy is, and how you can much more easily pick out what home school curriculum will work well for you and your child based on this information.
I have more to share with you, but as a one-woman show, with four kids to homeschool, I'm sure you can imagine I don’t get to post pages as often as I’d like. Bookmark this site, however, and you can keep up with the new tools we'll be offering.
You can be encouraged! With the good links to home school curriculum review sites and the practical information you can find out there, you are well on your way to learning what will work for you and your child.
May this information bring much joy and success to your home school.
