Steps to Finding Your
Home Schooling Core Values

Want to find the best home school curriculum? Discovering your home schooling core values is one of the most important steps in finding the best curriculum for your family. Knowing what is at the heart of your values will give you the confidence to know what to look for, and what won’t work for you, too.

But what are core values for home schooling, anyway?

Basically, your core values are the underlying assumptions that shape what you think about home schooling, how you approach teaching your child, when you’ll start teaching, and how you’ll evaluate how your child is doing. All these core values shape how you will face each day with your child, and what you’ll use to teach.

Take a look at the following pages, work through the questions, and take notes to help you sort through some of the issues. Taking time now to find your home schooling core values will help you will be much better equipped to bring joy and success to your home school.

I've listed these in one order, but you if you may find it more helpful to skip around. I do recommend that you go through all the areas, however, since they all are areas you'll deal with at some point as you plan what you'll need for your home school curriculum.

Step 1: Understand Yourself
We often overlook this important area and just jump ahead to our child and the materials we want to use. But, knowing yourself will help you day in and day out when the hard times come. What will help you enjoy and thrive while you home school?

Step 2: Understand Your Child
Know how your child is unique and how you can make the most of who he or she is. After all, one of the biggest benefits of home schooling is being able to tailor your child's education to what makes him or her unique.

Step 3: Understand What Home School Curriculum You Want to Use
Most people skip ahead to this step when choosing home school curriculum. Once you've worked through the other two steps, though, you'll be more prepared to know what to look for in the actual home schooling materials and catalogs.
