Free Decision Making Tool
for Home Schooling

Life as a home schooling parent is full of decisions, isn’t it? What math curriculum should I use? Should I switch spelling programs? Is home schooling through high school the best option, or will something else be better for my child? Should I spend the money to buy books or try to borrow them from the library? What is the best way to motivate my child to do his work? What level is best for my child -- review more, forge ahead, or take a middle-of-the-road approach?

All these decisions and more can be stressful for us as home schoolers. Like we need more stress?!

Don’t you just wish you could have some simple tool that could help you decide?

Well, I have some great news for you!

Now, let me first say that the Choose It decision-making tool is no substitute for the Best Advisor there is. This is a tool, not a genie in a magic box.

I’ll give an example I used last week as I thought about what grammar program to use next year for my 6th and 4th grade daughters.

  • Enter your options. For me these were:
    • Easy Grammar

  • Next enter your desires. Some factors I considered were:
    • Easy to teach -- without having to learn a new system
    • Makes it understandable -- not just done by rote memorization
    • Not too expensive or is reusable
    • Allows discovery
    • Other factors that are important to you.

  • Finally, prioritize each of your desires. This is where the rubber really meets the road.

    You need to think through which is more important to you, that your student learn to be self-teaching, or that you can learn together as a family? That your child develop self-discipline through this program, or an interest in the subject matter? The answers to these questions and others will be critical in finding a good fit for your home school curriculum.

  • Then, Choose It reduces all those complex factors into an informative bar graph.

    Naturally, the graph is not necessarily The Answer. But seeing such a graphic answer to your question can confirm a hunch you had, help you realize one option is really not worth considering, or just help you see why the decision has been so difficult for you.
