Below is a list of many of the online home schooling options available. If you haven't already looked over our page on What To Look For In Online Home Schooling, I would encourage you to do so. On it you'll find the steps to finding a good online home school option for your child:

  • Find out what to look for in an online home school or class.

I've divided the listings into those that are faith-based and those that are secular.

ALEKS Online Math Courses

Age: Elementary to high school
Teaching type: Online course with computerized guidance. Basically a computerized tutor, but with highly effective programming. As their website says, "Through adaptive questioning, ALEKS accurately assesses a student's knowledge state and then delivers targeted instruction on the topics a student is most ready to learn."
Accredited: No.
Only individual courses.

Teaching type: Independent learning with occasional academic assistance; an Enhanced Student Services option provides a "teacher-directed" class.
Curriculum type: Either print-based work texts or computer-based Switched-On-Schoolhouse (SOS).
Accredited: Yes.

Bob Jones HomeSat
Worldview: Protestant
Age: K-12
Teaching and curriculum type: Two options:

  • BJ HomeSat: Courses and lots of other resources delivered either by DVD or satellite. Student watches the class and does the work, and the parent corrects the work.
  • BJ LINC: Courses are offered live via satellite with this Live Interactive Network Classroom. Includes secondary, college-level and Bible study courses as well as MBA program.
Accredited: No, though their website says that the schools serviced by BJ LINC are accredited.

Worldview: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Age: Middle school, high school, college and adult education courses
Teaching Type: Modular, work at your own pace.
Curriculum type: Online curriculum including some teacher-graded assignments. The materials can be either print-based or web-based.
Accredited: The high school courses are accredited.

Calvert School
Worldview: Secular
Age: Pre-Kindergarten-8
Teaching and curriculum type: Several options:

  • Calvert Classic: traditional format with books, workbooks, flexible pacing, education counselors
  • Calvert Online: (6th-8th grade) Daily, online, prerecorded instsruction by a Calvert instructor with online assessments and other Calvert Classic materials.
  • Calvert Virtual Academy: (6-8th grade) Daily, online, live instruction by a Calvert Virtual Academy Online Instructor. Set schedule and students remain with a class throughout the year. Comes with other Calvert Classic materials.
Accredited: Yes

Christa McAuliffe Academy
Worldview: Secular
Age: K-12
Teaching type: Independent learning and/or discussion classes
Curriculum type:Depends on the student's age.

  • Elementary school: Uses Compass Learning's The Learning Odyssey. Comprehensive, individualized curriculum delivered entirely over the Internet.
  • High school: Online courses where you can go at your own pace. Mentors provide counseling, assessment and support to students. Also has weekly online classes to provide an opportunity for group discussion with peers or for students to present lessons or projects.

Teaching and curriculum type: Offers either print-based (Accelerated Christian Education's PACEs) or computer-based Switched-On-Schoolhouse. Progress is monitored by the staff and parental support is provided.

Worldview: Secular. Virtual public charter school.

Teaching type: K-8 the parents are the primary teachers. Teacher interaction comes through phone conferences, parent-teacher workshops and other means.

Teaching type: Online course with curriculum developed by Calvert School, Prentice-Hall, online BrainPop and Hooked on Phonics, as well as their own curriculum. Teachers help students to review assignments or provide extra help.
Accredited: Yes.

There are several tutorial services available through this site including Oxford Tutorial Services, SCHOLA Classical Tutorials and others.
Worldview: Protestant
Age: Not stated, but best for high schoolers or advanced junior high schoolers.
Teaching type: Online classes in real-time. Interactive with the teacher and students. Several different classically-based classes are offered (Great Books, Shakespeare, History, Greek and others)
Curriculum type: Books and other materials.
Accredited: No.
Offers only individual classes.

King's Way Classical Academy (formerly Classical Free Virtual Academy)
As of this writing they are updating their website so the site is a work in progress. It looks well worth a look.
Worldview: Protestant
Age: Junior high and high school
Teaching type: Several options available.

  • Home taught courses are free introductory-level courses you take at your own pace and are computer-graded)
  • Monitor taught courses include a monitor who interacts with the students via a forum to answer questions
  • Tutor taught courses are taught on a real-time learning environment with online interaction between students and teacher. Fixed starting and ending date.

Teaching type: Depends on the type of curriculum chosen (see below).
Curriculum type: Online and print-based options. Curriculum options vary depending on the age. Includes UC-approved honors courses and special needs offerings. On and off-line assignments.

The School of Tomorrow's provider for online schooling using their Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) materials.

Teaching type: Individualized, mastery-based learning using PACE modules. modules. Back-to-basics curriculum that focuses on providing the student with reasonable goals and learning that is measurable and rewarded. An advisor is assigned to help provides curriculum advice and evaluations.

Age: Junior high (though the Canadian NorthStar site offers from 5th grade), high school
Teaching type: Teacher and peer interaction in classes; within this, work somewhat at own pace.
Curriculum type: Lessons are created by the teachers rather than web-based or pre-packaged curriculum. Books and other materials.
Accredited: Yes.

Orange Lutheran High School Online
Worldview: Protestant
Age: High school with dual college enrollment options.
Teaching type: Highly interactive between students and teachers rather than self-study. Classes are asynchronous (not at a predetermined time), though students are required to log in Monday through Friday.
Curriculum type: Their website says that course material is downloaded from the instructors on a daily basis, which leads me to believe the materials are most if not all web-based.
Accredited: Yes.

Pennsylvania Homeschoolers Online AP and SAT Classes
Worldview: Secular
Age: High school
Teaching type: Highly interactive online classes, though asynchronous (you donÍt have to be online at a predetermined time).
Curriculum type: Web and a lot of print-based material.

Only individual classes offered. More than a dozen classes offered.

Accredited: By the local school.
Students can take up to three courses at one time.
